Smith & Graham Join Certainty National Register of Wills

As part of our continuing drive to provide our clients with the best quality service, Smith and Graham joined the Certainty National Register of Wills in September 2011.

In a recent survey, 67% of people surveyed did not know where to find their parents’ Wills. Indeed tens of thousands of estates do fall into intestacy each year, which can cause emotional and financial turmoil for loved ones.

Although we keep a database of all the Wills which we hold, changing circumstances, moving to another area or simply the passage of time can sometimes make it difficult for our executors and beneficiaries to locate a Will. Registration of our Wills ensures that solicitors across the country can log the existence of Wills in a central place.  This ensures that our Wills are easily traceable by beneficiaries and not overlooked.

What does the registry of Wills do?

  • The registry records that we hold your Will; no one there sees it, and we keep it here.
  • Following your death, the registry gives us details about anyone who is looking for your Will.
  • We answer the query if it is legitimate, but if not we ignore it, thus protecting both your privacy and your beneficiaries.

Wills and Probate partner Andrew Blair said “Making a will is the most important thing we can do to be sure that we pass on our estates to the people we chose. However, our wishes could be overlooked if our will cannot be traced. Will registration gives our clients the peace of mind of knowing that their wills can always be located and I am delighted that Smith & Graham are now able to offer this service to our clients”.

Smith & Graham provide a personal will writing service tailored to our clients’ circumstances and advise on tax planning and asset protection issues with a view to maximising what you can pass to your beneficiaries. This includes minimising the potential impact of inheritance tax and future care costs on your estate. Please contact Andrew Blair on 01429 271651 for further information or an informal chat about the options open to you.
